.. using a OV-chipkaart (public transport chip card) is a cost effective way to get around on public transport?Amsterdam has an efficient network of public transport in the form of trams, buses, trains and the metro.
How to use the OV-chipkaart?
It is important that you always check in and check out of each vehicle. This includes when transferring. To check in, just hold your card in front of the card reader. These are located at all the entrance and exit doors of trams and buses.
When leaving the tram or bus, you should check out by holding your card in front of the card reader once again. In the metro hold your card in front of the metro gate to open the metro gate. When transferring by metro you do not have to check out, and check in again in between your journey.
You should only check out at the end of your metro journey.
Where to buy tickets?
You can buy either a card with 15 strips (€6.90) or with 45 strips (€20.40). They are on sale at station kiosk outlets, post offices, the GVB 
(Amsterdam Transport Company) ticket desk opposite Central Station, supermarkets and newsagents.
