The Montelbaanstoren (Montelban Tower) on the Oudeschans in the Lastage neighbourhood of Amsterdam
The Montelbaanstoren is an old city defence tower located on the beautiful Oudeschans canal.
It was built in 2 different styles: the lower part was built in the 16th century; the spire was added as a decoration later on.
When the city expanded further eastward the defence function of the tower and canal was lost and the Montelbaanstoren - Montelbaan was a family name - got a clock and a few bells.
The tower is nicknamed Malle Jaap ('Mad Jaap'), because the bells of the tower once spontaneously started playing at irregular intervals.
The Montelbaanstoren is located on the Oudeschans canal in the former Jewish quarter.
Other nearby attractions are the Zuiderkerk, Rembrandt House Museum, Nieuwmarkt and NEMO Science Museum.
