Museum of Bags is a small, but different, museum that tells the story of the bag

Museum of Bags Amsterdam* is on the move. The museum wants to become a sparkling House full of stories about the bag, but also about fashion, design, business and society.

* the former Museum of Bags and Purses Hendrikje (Tassenmuseum Hendrikje)

The bag is no longer regarded as an object, but as a subject through which new perspectives and stories about its culture – development and experience – are explained through special and surprising presentations.

The Museum of Bags and Purses is a unique museum with a collection covering the Western bag that ranges from the Middle Ages through to the present.

The bags give a fascinating picture of the great variety of function, form, kind material and sorts of decoration used through the centuries.

The building

Tassenmuseum is housed in a historic canal house  dating back to 1664. It has a café and a garden laid out in historical style. The building has fine period rooms with original ceiling paintings and mantelpieces dating back to the 17th century.

In addition to the permanent presentation of bags from the 16th to 21st century, the Museum of Bags can be visited for surprising temporary exhibitions .
