Multatuli (1820-1887)

Dutch writer - regarded as one of the most important Dutch writers of all time

In 1860, Eduard Douwes Dekker published his novel Max Havelaar under the pseudonym of Multatuli, which denounced the abuses of colonialism in the Dutch East Indies (today's Indonesia).

His statue stands on the wide Torensluis Bridge over the Singel canal, close to Dam Square.
