The Muiderslot from 1280 is a castle in Muiden, about 15 km southeast of Amsterdam, at the mouth of the river Vecht in the IJsselmeer ( former Zuiderzee).
Muiderslot Castle in Muiden
The Muiderslot Castle is currently a national museum. The insides of the castle, its rooms and kitchens, have been restored to look like they did in the 17th century and several of the rooms now house a good collection of arms and armour.
The Muiderslot was built by Count Floris V when he gained command over an area that used to be part of the Sea of Utrecht. Utrecht was one of the most important trade towns of that age.
One of the most famous owners of the castle shows up in the 16th century, when P.C. Hooft, a famous author, poet and historian took over sheriff and bailiff duties for the Gooiland area. For almost 40 years he spent his summers in the castle and invited friends, scholars, poets and painters like Vondel, Huygens, Bredero and Maria Tesselschade Visscher, over for visits. This group became known as the Muiderkring (Muiden Circle).

In medieval times, Muiden served as Utrecht's outer harbour; later it was converted to take its place in the bulwarks and defences around Amsterdam. Everywhere in this small town, casemates and barracks can be found. Apart from its picturesque centre, one of Muiden's most popular attractions is Muiderslot Castle.
From Amsterdam IJburg you can take the Amsterdam Tourist Ferry to Muiderslot Castle and Fortress Island Pampus, both part of the UNESCO world heritage fortress stretch around Amsterdam.
